Choosing Wine for the First Time — Where Do You Start?

Have you ever stood in front of a shelf full of wine bottles and thought, I have absolutely no idea which one to pick?

You’re not alone. I see it all the time. Wine can feel confusing at first, unfamiliar names, different regions, and labels that don’t always tell you very much. But the good news is that choosing wine doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it should be one of life’s simple pleasures. When people join one of my tastings on Skye, the first thing I say is this: you don’t need to know everything about wine to enjoy it. You just need to start with what you like.

A good place to begin is by thinking about flavours you already enjoy in food and drink. If you like fresh, crisp drinks like lemonade or green apples, you’ll probably enjoy lighter white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc. These wines often have bright, refreshing flavours and are easy to enjoy on their own or with simple dishes like seafood or salads.

If you prefer something a little softer and rounder, Chardonnay can be a lovely introduction. Some Chardonnays are fresh and citrusy, while others are richer, with flavours that remind people of baked apples or a touch of vanilla.

Red wine can feel a bit more mysterious for beginners, but it doesn’t need to be. A great starting point is something smooth and easy-drinking like a Merlot. It’s usually gentle, with soft fruit flavours like plum or blackberry. Nothing too heavy, just comforting and approachable.

Another good beginner red is Pinot Noir. It’s lighter than many red wines and often reminds people of cherries or raspberries. It’s the kind of wine that works beautifully with food but is still enjoyable on its own.

One of the things I always encourage people to do is stop worrying about getting it “right”. Wine isn’t a test. There’s no correct answer. The best wine is simply the one you enjoy drinking. Over the years I’ve had so many conversations with customers who thought they didn’t understand wine, only to discover they already knew what they liked; they just hadn’t been given the confidence to explore it.

That’s really what wine is about – Curiosity. Trying something new. Sharing a bottle with friends or enjoying a quiet glass at the end of the day.

If choosing wine still feels a bit daunting, that’s exactly why I started Wine Guy on Skye. I spend my time visiting vineyards, meeting the people behind the wines, and selecting bottles that are delicious, approachable, and fairly priced so that you can simply enjoy without overthinking them.

If you’re ever unsure what to try next, feel free to get in touch. I’m always happy to help people discover a wine they’ll love.

And who knows — the bottle you choose next might just become your new favourite.
